Victory's new Nelson memorial
A new memorial to Admiral Lord Nelson was consecrated this afternoon aboard HMS Victory. It marks the spot on Victory's orlop deck where Nelson died, and replaces the previous monument which was found to be in the wrong place.

Victory's curator, Peter Goodwin, discovered the error after studying the painting 'The Death of Nelson'. The new memorial is located about 6m further forward than its predecessor, and was carved by sculptor Philip Chatfield using a limestone centrepiece from a site near Cape Trafalgar and oak timbers recovered from Victory during one of her refits.

Lt Cdr John Scivier, Victory's Commanding Officer, said that the memorial "will be a fitting and apt memorial to perhaps the greatest naval leader this world has ever known."
