Female landmark for Portsmouth
For the first time in over 800 years women will control shipping in Portsmouth Harbour. Samantha Clutton and Claire Thompson have been appointed as Port Control Assistants and will give permission for ships to pass through the small harbour entrance and communicate with sailors via radio.

Portsmouth's Queen's Harbour Master, Commander Stephen Hopper Royal Navy, said: "This is a huge landmark in the history of the harbour." Women have not been involved in port control communications since the naval base was established in 1194.
