Plans to reopen Chichester Canal
- Fri, 3 Feb 2012
Plans have been announced to reopen Chichester Canal to navigation by installing new entry lock from Chichester Harbour and a lifting bridge near Donnington, which means boaters may be able to navigate into the heart of the historic city of Chichester in the future.
The Chichester Ship Canal Trust also intends to redevelop Chichester Basin to provide shoreside facilities for visiting boats, including a harbour office and toilets. Linda Wilkinson - Trust chairman - said: "We should have boats coming in from all around the UK and abroad."
Reopening the canal has been a long-term ambition for the Trust, but there is still a long way to go before their plan becomes reality. Consultations will need to be held with Chichester Harbour Conservancy, planning authorities, and local residents even before detailed plans can be drawn up and an application submitted.
