Boats crushed on Danube
- Mon, 20 Feb 2012
The River Danube in the Serbian capital of Belgrade is in chaos as the big thaw begins to take its toll.
As the solid ice, which brought the busy waterway to a standstill during the recent freeze, began to melt this weekend, boats and pontoons took the full brunt. Many were ripped from their moorings and, entangled in the full flow of ice, there were few that escaped without serious damage.
According to the BBC website, emergency services in Belgrade say there is no ice risk to bridges and other infrastructure in the city, and no threat of flooding.
