MV Carrier stranded and full of diesel on the beach at Colwyn Bay
As five metre waves and
40 knot winds hit the Welsh coast, the Marine and Coastguard Agency (MCA) are
concerned about the real threat of fuel leaking from MV Carrier as it is
battered against the beach in Colwyn Bay, North Wales.
Last night, MV Carrier, which holds 40,000 litres of oil onboard, issued a
distress call shortly after it had been loaded with limestone at a local port.
Dave Stafford, an eyewitness,
told Sky News, “The helicopter flew out and then dropped the rescued seamen on
the A55 where the police and ambulances were waiting. Later another helicopter
arrived to rescue the other two men.”
The North Wales Police said
in a statement, “A number of agencies including HM Coastguard, North Wales Fire
and Rescue Service, Police, local authorities and Trunk Road Agency are working
together to ensure public safety and that normality returns to the area as soon
as possible.”
