Man trapped between boat and harbour wall in Bristol

Police in the centre of Bristol went to the aid of a "heavily built" man who had somehow become trapped between a boat and the harbour wall

Police officers finishing their shift helped save a man who got into trouble in Bristol harbour in the early hours of 30 November after hearing his cries for help.

The man, described as “heavily built” had somehow become stuck in the water between a boat moored in the harbour and the harbour wall by Bristol Bridge.

Two officers had to enter the freezing water to put a lifebelt round the man while their two colleagues secured ropes to keep him safe until the fire service rescue boat was launched. The two officers and the victim were later taken to Bristol Royal Infirmary where they were treated for hypothermia.

Patrol inspector of Avon and Somerset Constabulary, David Hunt, said: “This was a very impressive team effort by all four officers and I have no doubt if it was not for their rapid and brave response then we might have been dealing with a fatality. The efforts sapped the strength of and energy of all officers who were committed to helping a person in distress.
