Two new sportscruisers from the Swedish master, Nord West

For: Probably the best standard spec in the world
Against: Less space than some 37-footers

This is not one boat, but two based on the same hull - the Sport and SportsTop. The only difference between the two is the SportsTop comes with a hardtop with sliding canvas roof (as opposed to the Sport version's open cockpit).

The SportsTop delivers all the protection you need with 6ft 2in of headroom, but avoids any boxy, heavy-on-the-eye superstructure.

The canvas hood retreats at the touch of a button to reveal a 6ft-long sun trap. It's a great feature, but one that makes the SportsTop £18k more expensive than the Sport version.

Below decks, both boats are identical, with Nord West opting for a rich mahogany fitout, which exudes plenty of class, rather than a contemporary edge.

The forward master cabin is comfortable with plenty of stowage space, and the mid cabin, too, is a winner, with the use of space particularly impressing here.

Both boats excel on the water, with the SportsTop slightly slower off the line, but, on balance, it delivers a more measured and intuitive feedback at the helm.

IPS is available on both boats, but we prefer them on sterndrives, especially as they come with Volvo's new Aquamatic joystick control, which allows one-touch mooring control.

Tested October 2009.

No yard is better at producing top-quality, beautifully finished craft than Nord West.
