The old S38 was a capable enough cruiser, but it was more about comfort than brute driving force. But something radical has happened back at the Sealine factory, because exactly the same hull has been transformed into a hard-nosed racer.
Right from the off it feels taut, eager to please. Hitting a top speed of nearly 40 knots, the SC38's 350hp D6 engines and DPH drives are a perfect partner for this new-found agility.
Buts this boat has beauty and brawn in equal measure. The new metallic paint job may be horribly impractical, but who cares, it looks awesome.
Teak has been used to stunning effect on the foredeck, and in the cockpit, the portside bench lifts into a figure-hugging sunlounger while the main seating converts from dining area to sunpad.
Below decks, two huge skylights run across the saloon deckhead and long rectangular ports let air and even more light flood in.
Timber plays an important role in adding depth to the design sheen with solid walnut and cleancut oak cabinetry throughout.
The galley is well stocked for stowage and culinary hardware, and a recess at the back of the counter top is a practical draining area.
Both sleeping cabins are impressive, conveying a large sense of space. The forward master gets to be closer to the shower compartment and separate toilet - a massive boon on any cruiser - but the mid cabin gets the headlines for its family friendly, three berth arrangement.
Verdict
Sealine's SC series is officially the most exciting thing to happen to sportscruisers in years.
