Corvette is back and its new model is roomier than ever, but how does the 340 rate against the classic 320?

For: Improved aft cabin and solid build quality
Against: Perched on metal pedestals, the two helm seats stand out like a pair of work boots at a ball.

With its strong cruising credentials and chirpy looks, the British-built Corvette 320 was a popular boat ever since its launch in the mid 1970s. So it was a sad day when the last boat rolled off the production line in 2008.

Out on the water, the Corvette displays a solid directional stability. The standard installation of twin 315hp Yanmars has been carried over from the original Corvette design. These still appear to be the right engines for the job as, even with the 340's extra weight, it only runs around a knot or so slower than the 320 at 24 knots. Ease back on the revs and the hull is content to slip along at whatever speed suits the mood.

Verdict

The new yard has put together a well-found boat, although this is clearly reflected in the price. Pumping up the aft deck to a raised full-beam affair has worked well on several levels but a rethink for the interior helm seating is needed.
