The blaze broke out just before 7.30pm and eight fire appliances and around 35 fire officers from York, Acomb, Tadcaster and Huntington rushed to the scene.

Firefighters used firefighting jets to control the fire while others wearing breathing apparatus boarded and searched the boat to make sure nobody was aboard. They also dealt with a quantity of marine fuel which was involved in the fire, and neighbouring properties were evacuated as a precautionary measure because of the large quantities of smoke.

The boat, named Silver Sea, later sank at its mooring outside the King’s Arms pub on King’s Staith. Investigations are now being carried out to find out how the fire started but police say that it is not being treated as suspicious.
